Conservation and Sustainable Use of Tropical Wetlands Biodiversity

22 October 2022

*) This event is free of charge for graduate students (Ind.: Mahasiswa Pascasarjana)

Wetlands are area where water and lands meets therefore it is a land that saturated with water. Wetlands are divided into permanent wetlands and seasonal wetlands. In the world is estimated 4.7 million square kilometers area of tropical and subtropical wetlands. Tropical wetlands are one of the ecosystems that have a very important role because of their high biodiversity and enormous socio-ecological value.

Wetlands are one of the most productive ecosystems. They are able to provide various ecosystem services, namely social, economic, environmental and cultural benefits. These services include maintaining water quality, food sources, sequestering carbon, regulating atmospheric gases and ecotourism. However, tropical wetlands are prone to exploitation which can trigger wetland degradation. Anthropogenic activities that can trigger wetland degradation such as deforestation, land use and overexploitation of wetland resources.

Therefore, we should be wise in term of how we utilize wetlands for our need and not using it excessively, and keep to maintain its ecological aspects and unique character of tropical wetlands, in align to strive for sustainable development. This is all is an effort to support wetlands conservation, so the benefit we have from the wetlands are sustainable.
